I've never done aerobics.   Will I fit in?

Absolutely!  We welcome new students!  Just come to class and start moving with us, and you'll get it.  There's no pressure to achieve perfection or to work at a high level.  We all work at our own pace.  And you know what?  If you turn to the right instead of to the left, your heart can't tell the difference, and you still achieve the same aerobic benefits.  Just have fun with it!

Are Jacki's Aerobic Programs safe?

Yes!  Jacki's programs are carefully and meticulously prepared with your safety in mind.  Our programs are based on sound physiological concepts and safe biomechanical principles.  A team of consultants including cardiologists, exercise physiologists, physical therapists, and biomechanic experts assist with quality control of each program, assuring safety and prevention of injuries.  We monitor heart rates in class after every aerobic routine to ensure you're working at a safe level.

What should I wear to class?

  • An athletic shoe with good arch support and heel cushioning is a must.  Aerobic shoes are ideal because unlike jogging shoes, they are designed for movement in all directions.
  • Loose-fitting, comfortable clothing such as shorts and a t-shirt or a leotard.
  • Supportive athletic underwear may also help you feel more comfortable.

What should I bring to class?

  • A floor mat or large towel for the floor exercises.
  • Hand weights and/or ankle weights, if desired.  If you're just starting out, try one-pound weights.  As you progress, you can gradually increase the weight.  Weights are used during the Vertifirm segment.  (StrongStep classes do not use ankle weights.)
  • A bottle of water, if desired.
  • Don't forget your smile!

Are the classes vigorous?

Students work at their own level, so you may work out at a vigorous pace or at a low level, or anywhere in between.  If you're a beginner, you might only be able to walk through a class, barely raising your feet off of the floor and using little, if any, arm motion.  As your cardiovascular condition improves, feet and knees can be lifted higher, and arm movement can be added.  Listen to your body, and you'll know which level is best for you.  You'll be proud of your improvement in strength and stamina as you continue to exercise.

Do I need to memorize the routines?

No, that's not necessary at all!  We make it easy for you.  Your instructor cues all the steps for you and models the proper positioning.   The cue is given immediately before the step comes up to allow you time to get ready for the next step.  Your instructor also reminds you of proper breathing techniques and gives other hints to keep your workout safe and maximize the benefits.  You learn the routines by doing them; it's that easy!  In the Aerobic Dancing classes, the instructor teaches the dance the first week it is introduced, by demonstrating and walking the class through the steps.  Of course, your instructor will be happy to explain any moves you would like to review or clarify.  There is no homework, although you are certainly welcome to practice at home if you desire.
